Many of our stories are ones overlooked by mainstream media, and by giving a platform to LGBTQ creators and organizations, we foster growth and support across the community. BAO-LONG CHU

In a colorful profile of Bao-Long Chu — a senior program officer with the Houston Endowment, where he nurtures Houston’s arts scene via big-time grants — writer Sam Byrd says that Chu’s appreciation and love for the creative fields began during his childhood as a refugee from Vietnam. “He understood early on how storytelling can help both individuals and groups,” wrote Byrd.

A dynamic advocate for disability awareness and intersectional representation, Ashley McFaul shares their unique perspective through vibrant and educational content on TikTok and YouTube. McFaul is prime example of someone using these platforms to educate, inspire, and celebrate diversity, and OutSmart Media was proud to have the opportunity to share their story and bring awareness to their channels.

Will Davis

In an interview with writer Don Maines, freelance theater director Will Davis spoke about becoming the first trans director in the Alley Theatre’s storied history. “They told me that it’s exciting for them, and it’s exciting for me,” said Davis. “It’s important for me to be really visible as a trans or genderqueer person, and tell folks who think they have never met a trans person that you have met many. You just didn’t realize it.” Davis’s work continues to break barriers and foster visibility within the arts community.

First, meet Dina Jacobs, a legendary trans drag performer whose life was just chronicled in a new biopgraphy. Next, we introduce you to Erika Lopez, queer Chicana who just released a diverse new clothing line. Finally, get to know Wes Holloway, a disabled gay artist who is an activist for accessibility.
