Sustaining independent LGBTQ journalism and community storytelling in Houston.
For more than three decades, OutSmart has documented the stories, achievements, and challenges of Houston’s LGBTQ community. Through thoughtful reporting and community storytelling, the publication has become a trusted source of information, visibility, and connection for LGBTQ residents and allies.
The OutSmart Foundation for LGBTQ News and Media was established to sustain and expand this work by supporting independent journalism, educational media initiatives, and storytelling that reflects the diverse experiences of LGBTQ communities.
Over the years, OutSmart Media has earned numerous local and national awards for journalistic excellence while building strong partnerships with thousands of businesses and organizations that support the LGBTQ community and help sustain quality journalism.
A Legacy of Community Journalism
OutSmart was founded in 1994 by publisher Greg Jeu, with the support of community members who believed Houston’s LGBTQ community deserved a publication that reflected its diversity and evolving voice. At a time when many LGBTQ publications focused mainly on nightlife listings, OutSmart expanded the conversation with journalism covering the issues, people, and ideas shaping LGBTQ life.
From the beginning, the magazine reported on public policy, health, religion, arts and culture, sports, and community leadership—sharing the stories of LGBTQ people and allies while fostering visibility and understanding across the broader community.
Over the years, OutSmart has earned numerous local and national awards for journalistic excellence and remains a trusted voice documenting LGBTQ life in Houston.
